KING COUNTY - A man was arrested early Sunday at
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after security screeners at
his gate discovered he was carrying four razor blades.
The man was preparing to board a domestic flight shortly before
8 p.m. Saturday when a security screener checked him using a hand
wand and had him remove his shoes.
When he did so, four razor blades fell to the floor, according
to airport spokesman Bob Parker.
Initially, the screener didn't notice the blades. She allowed
the man to continue on toward his gate, but soon realized what had
happened and alerted other guards, who detained the man.
FBI agents questioned him for several hours, and he was arrested
sometime after 1 a.m. He was booked into King County Jail for
investigation of a state weapons charge, then posted bail later
Sunday morning, Parker said.
The man told authorities the blades fell from his shirt pocket
when he bent over to take off his shoes, Parker said. The incident
was under investigation.
He was expected to make an initial court appearance as soon as
Monday.
The man, 29, lives in Bellevue, Parker said. His name was not
immediately released. He was carrying a Washington driver's license
and a passport from India.
The man was scheduled to fly on a National Airlines flight to
Las Vegas and then on to Newark, N.J., Parker said.
Parker didn't know how the man got through the initial airport
security check and metal detector to get to the airport's South
Satellite.
An FBI agent in Seattle said Sunday there was no one in the
office who could comment on the arrest.
Parker said regardless of whether the FBI charges the man, the
Transportation Security Administration could fine the man.
