PORT ORCHARD - A man convicted of killing a police dog and shooting at a Bremerton officer has been sentenced to more than nine years in prison.

Aaron Williams was convicted of second-degree assault, killing a police dog and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He was sentenced Monday in Port Orchard.

Williams fired on officer Mike Davis in July, 2001at an east Bremerton park and killed his K-9 partner, Buddy.

Williams was wounded in the shootout and spent two weeks in a hospital. At his trial before Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Anna Laurie, Williams was acquitted of attempted murder and first-degree assault and convicted of lesser charges.

Deputy Prosecutor Justin Zaug asked for a sentence of nearly 20 years.

Defense lawyer John Muenster recommended a sentence of less than six years.

The judge's clerk, Shannon Kraft, says about half of the sentence -- 54 months -- was for the use of a deadly weapon and cannot be reduced.
