34-Year-Old Tradition May Come To A Screeching Halt
EVERETT - A 34-year-old tradition may come to a screeching halt.
There's big trouble for quarter-midget racers -- 65 kids without a place to race. Kids ages 5-to-16 race in cars about a quarter of the size of so-called midget cars raced by adults. About 50 families gather on weekends at Paine Field in Everett to race. Kerstin Smutney has been racing for 6 years, and she has the trophies to prove it. She and her mom, Denise Smutney, says quarter midget racing is a big deal. "We are a family oriented sport," said Denise Smutny. "We go out and camp, practice Saturday and then race on Sunday. We're the biggest club in this area." Paine Field has played host to the track for 34 years, but now the Federal Aviation Administration is enforcing a regulation saying airport property can't be used for non-airport purposes. The Smutneys also say the land is prime for development. So now they're looking for a new place to race. The problem is, they're only paying $27 a month to lease the land at Paine Field. "It's going to be tough and we've talked to people who've said we can do this but you'll have to pay fair market value for the land, " said Denise Smutny. As a non-profit group that just races for fun, 'fair market price' is not something they can afford. They're hoping someone can help them out with a piece of land, so they can build a small track and race on. The Washington Quarter Midget Association is the largest club in the Northwest. |
