SEATTLE - They were on their way to Paradise -- a popular spot on Mt. Rainier.
They were supposed to celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary.
"We had no idea, no idea whatsoever," says Kellie Cosner.
No idea that a wind shear would slice a tree in half and send it plummeting 3 stories down on their SUV.
Kellie's husband Jason died instantly. The car's roof crushed his chest.
"Of all the people, Jason seemed extremely invincible. It's still really hard for me to believe he's not around any more
it's just not like him," says Kellie.
What she also believes is that on that day, she was given her life back. She would learn months after the accident that her injuries were so severe, her doctors thought she wouldn't survive.
"Kellie was one of those patients that challenged us totally," says Dr. Gregory Jurkovich Chief of Trauma at Harborview Medical Center. "She had almost everything that can be wrong with a trauma patient she had, it wouldn't have surprised any of if she wouldn't have pulled through -- surprised each one of us that she did."
"My only reaction is: 'You can't be talking about me,' " says Kellie.
She doesn't remember the accident or the first month of recovery because she was unconscious. For six months, she remained hospitalized. More than a year after the accident, it's still a struggle. No one thought she'd walk again.
But now she is.
"I really have no idea how (being able to walk again) happened, just really glad it did," she said.
Actually, she has one idea.
"I'd like to think that Jason was one of my angels."
Kellie says in death as in life, Jason is inspiring her. Kellie says a team of strangers -- "angels of mercy" -- came to help her on the day of the accident. Without them, she doesn't think she would have survived.
She also considers the staff at Harborview Medical Center her lifesavers.
