KING COUNTY - On this day of remembrance, two local brothers wanted to do something that has never been done before. Not for themselves but to remember fallen colleagues.
Justin Kissel is a Wenatchee police officer. His younger brother Trever is a Mercer Island firefighter.
Their goes was to take on Mount Rainier on Sept. 11 to honor their fallen colleagues.
"It means a lot for me to go up there with him -- police and firefighter, brothers," Trever said.
Trever summited Mt. Rainier last year with a group of other police and firefighters as part of a group called 'Cops on top - Fire on the mountain.'
"The goal is to establish in every state's highest peak, a firefighter or police officer on top," Trever said.
His brother just took up mountaineering.
"I was really proud of him," Justin said. "He got to do it the first time now that I have some experience to do it with him."
For the climb, Justin also brought a personal tribute to a fallen Chelan County deputy.
"Part of the drive and dedication is not only for the 9-11, it's also for fallen Deputy Saul Gallegos from Chelan County," Justin said.
The two started their climb. But unlike last year's blue skies, this year nature didn't cooperate. They had to turn back.
They are setting their sights on next year.
"I would like to be there when the goal is reached for all 50 states to have accomplished," Justin said.
The Kissel brothers hope to become the first police officer and firefighter brother team to
reach the summit of Mt. Rainier.
