SEATTLE - Krist Novoselic, a founder of Nirvana, says he may run for lieutenant governor.

Novoselic, who played bass in the band that featured the late Curt Cobain, has more recently been a Democratic activist.

If he ran for lieutenant governor next year, he would be facing off with a fellow Democrat, current Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen. But the 38-year-old Novoselic says he's thinking seriously about the race and is talking to party leaders about it. He says he doesn't want to go through a major political year merely as a spectator.

State Democratic Party Chairman Paul Berendt says he doesn't encourage campaigns against his own party's incumbents. But he notes it wouldn't be unprecedented to have a celebrity in the post.

Former University of Washington football coach John Cherberg served eight terms as lieutenant governor, and big-band leader Vic Meyers was lieutenant governor for 20 years, in the 1930s and '40s, and later served another eight as secretary of state.
