SEATTLE - Look at the face of what people fear.
80-year-old Phyllis Lyon.
She represents the reason President Bush will reportedly push for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
83-year-old Dorothy Martin.
She has the self-righteous writhing in indignation.
Lyon and Martin are lesbians; together 51 years.
They were recently married in a San Francisco civil ceremony.
I find it incredibly sad that a majority of people in this country not only feel threatened by Dorothy and Phyllis, they loathe what they've done.
People so petty that they'd deny gays and lesbians their dignity; people so mean as to deny them the right to be with a terminally ill partner, or deny them something so simple as signing a contract together, all benefits of what society sees as marriage.
These people brandish Bibles like a shield, and seek to use the Constitution as a weapon; a means to their spiteful end.
They use a loving God and a document of freedom to cast moral judgement, to assure political repression and foster social discrimination.
That is nothing but wrong.
All people like Phyllis and Dorothy want to do is make things right for themselves.
