Tacoma Police Officer Killed In Traffic Accident
TACOMA - A Tacoma police officer was killed Tuesday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a car as he was responding to a traffic stop.

James Lewis, 45, had been with the department since 1985.

Lewis was responding to a call for assistance on a felony traffic stop, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. Officers who made the stop thought the vehicle might contain some wanted individuals.

Fulghum said Lewis had his lights and siren operating at the intersection of 55th Street and Alaska Street, and most traffic had pulled aside, but one car made a left turn in front of him. He collided with the car and was fatally injured.

The driver of the other car, a woman, was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her condition was not immediately available Tuesday evening.
