Oops, The Lie Was Too Transparent

Oops, The Lie Was Too Transparent
SEATTLE - I appreciate Congressman Jim McDermott.

I don't agree with him much, but I like what he brings to the party in the way of healthy debate.

He's not your typical 'cookie-cutter' congressman.

That said, his antics with the Pledge of Allegiance are pretty sad.

As he led the pledge in the U.S. House, McDermott skipped over the words "under God."

Now he says that was an accident; that he somehow slipped into some mental time warp and recited the pledge as he learned it lo those many years ago.

Riiiiight.

Congressman, you've made it clear: If you had your way, the words "under God" would be gone from the pledge permanently.

You chose the House floor as your stage to make a point.

For you to turn around with a weak "oops" is out of line, and out of character.

For my part, I think the words "under God" should remain in the pledge, but that's not my point here.

My point is that people know politicians lie to them.

But usually those lies are cloaked so that the politician's butt is covered when the truth comes out.

Your mistake, Congressman McDermott, is that your lie is just so damn transparent.
