FORT LEWIS, WASH. - Two soldiers based at Fort Lewis were
killed in separate attacks on U.S. military convoys in northern
Iraq.
The U.S. Defense Department identified one of the soldiers
Sunday as Spc. Trevor A. Wine, 22 of Orange, Calif.
A statement posted on the department's Web site said Wine died
in Tikrit on Saturday, a day after his vehicle hit an improvised
explosive device.
Wine was assigned to the Army's 24th Quartermaster Company based
at Fort Lewis, south of Tacoma.
Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the
second soldier killed.
Fort Lewis spokesman Joe Hitt said the soldier's name would be
withheld until family members are notified.
The second soldier was killed Saturday morning when a
rocket-propelled grenade hit the convoy he was riding in, The News
Tribune of Tacoma reported Sunday.
That incident also occurred south of Qayyarah, a city along the
main north-south Highway 1 about 25 miles south of Mosul, where
task force headquarters are located.
Earlier this week, Spc. Jacob Herring, 21, of Kirkland, died
after his Stryker squad was attacked with a hand grenade near Tall
Afar, about 45 miles west of Mosul. He had been stationed at Fort
Lewis.
