Watch Out For Counterfeit Cashier's Checks

Watch Out For Counterfeit Cashier's Checks
SEATTLE - You'd never sell a big ticket item on the Internet and accept a personal check because it could bounce. But when the buyer offers a cashier's check, you may let your guard down. Con artists know that.

"And the counterfeits are so good that they're getting past the bankers," warns Shawn Mosch, a victim turned consumer crusader.

Shawn and her husband were selling a car via web ads when they got burned by a bogus cashier's check. That check was made out for more than the asking price.

The buyer said the extra $8,000 should be wired to his shipper, which is what they did.

"And that was the last time we ever heard from them," Shawn says.

People across the country are being victimized by this cashier's check scam. In Shawn's case, she deposited that cashier's check with no problem and made sure the money was credited to her account. But about a week later, she got a call from the bank,"and they said, well sorry, it came back counterfeit and now you owe the money."

Shawn wants everyone to know that a cashier's check can take 7-10 days to clear. If it is found to be counterfeit, the bank will probably say it's your problem, not theirs.
