FEDERAL WAY - The Federal Way Police Department is investigating a third-grader's allegation that she was forced to perform a sex act on a classmate in a school library.

"The alleged assault was between a 9 year old boy, and a 10 year old girl," said Federal Way Police spokeswoman Stacy Flores. Publicly, the police department can't say much more.

But KOMO 4 News has learned that the alleged attack occurred last Friday at Brigadoon Elementary in Federal Way. The girl claims the boy attacked her as the two third graders sat in the library.

According to her family, the girl says the boy suddenly grabbed her by the hair, punched her in the face and forced her to perform oral sex on him. The family says the boy then threatened her and told her not to tell.

The next day, the girl's grandparents reported the incident to Federal Way police.

"I think we have to move away from being shocked and take action and work with the police," said Diane Turner of the Federal Way School District.

The school district says it is very concerned about the girl, but only learned of the alleged attack on Monday. They say the girl never reported it to her teacher or the school's librarian, and that no one else reported it either.

"There were students in the library and the librarian was checking out books," said Turner.

The girl has not returned to school since the alleged attack and her family is upset that the boy has been allowed to stay in school.

"We have unsubstantiated information and it would be irresponsible to take any action on any information that has not been corroborated," said Turner. "Being so young, and this particular type of... allegation, it's just difficult to piece everything together and get the facts in order."

Federal Way police say they are moving quickly to determine what happened, but are treading lightly given the age of the children involved.

At this point, the school district does not plan to send a letter home to parents. They say it wouldn't be right until they know all the facts.
