Mercer Island Middle School Closed Through Friday
MERCER ISLAND - The 1,100 students at Islander Middle School on Mercer Island awoke Wednesday morning to find that their classes were canceled.

Rumors that some kids might bring guns were the reason.

And now the school says it will remain closed Thursday and Friday as well.

Monday, police arrested an eighth grader with a gun in his backpack. And now they say the two cases are connected.

"We don't have any school today, happily but very scarily," says Islander Middle School sixth grader, Gabbie Vizzutti.

"Happily, but scarily" sums up how Islander Middle School students feel about the news they woke up to.

Even though school was canceled, eighth grader Eric Adams came anyway. "Wow, why would someone do that? It's kinda crazy to think that would happen here."

It's hard for even the district's superintendent to believe that on Monday a 14-year-old student was arrested for bringing a revolver and two bullets to school. He was expelled and faces criminal charges.

And then, a day later, the principal got an anonymous e-mail warning that others were plotting to bring guns to finish what the 14-year-old started. Instead of students, cops went to school Wednesday, as well as a bomb sniffing dog just in case other weapons were inside.

The superintendent decided to cancel classes.

"We don't have enough info to say were safe, or we're not safe," said superintendent Cynthia Simms. She moved here from Colorado. She was there for the Columbine shootings.

"This definitely has some elements that would say 'Take it seriously,' " says Simms.

Sixth grader Jenna Julich added: "It's scary to think people you know could be bringing guns to school to try and shoot people that you know."
