SEATTLE - It's official.
According to our unscientific poll, at least 80 percent of the people in our area thought it was too hot again Saturday. (As for those other 20 percent, they're probably in that same group as that fifth dentist that never recommends anything anyway.)
To wrap up the book on Friday and Saturday, as you might imagine, we set several records.
Friday
First off, Friday had the second-warmest nighttime hours in history. The lowest temperature in Seattle on Friday was 68 degrees (set around 4:30 a.m.). The record is 69 degrees. (Incidentally, we're on the hook to tie that record Saturday. The low so far is 69 degrees.)
As for the more gaudy heat records, Olympia tied its record high of 99 degrees set in 1991. Hoquaim and Forks both set record highs with a 93 degree reading, breaking their old records of 84 and 87, respectively, in 1991. Seattle's record high was 99 (also set in that hot summer of 1991) but we "only" reached 96, so that record still stood.
Here's a list of some of the highs from Friday:
- Seattle: 96
- Bellevue: 97
- Tacoma: 97
- Everett: 90
- Bremerton: 99
- Shelton: 100
- Gig Harbor: 94
- Bellingham: 88
- Friday Harbor: 95(!)
- Port Angeles: 92
- Arlington: 95
- Olympia: 99
- Kelso: 100
- Forks & Hoquiam: 93
- Astoria, OR: 96
- Portland: 103
- Vancouver, WA: 103
Saturday
High temperatures for Saturday were on par with Friday. Only this time, the records were much more in reach. Seattle's shattered its record high of 91 degrees with a high temperature of 94. Bellevue hit 98, Tacoma 97, Everett 90, Bremerton and Olympia were both at 99 again (a record for Olympia), Arlington 93, Friday Harbor 88, Bellingham 86 (another record high) and Port Angeles was at 85.
But it was much cooler on the coast as the marine breezes returned. Forks did manage to get to 86 before the temperature sharply fell toward afternoon to the low 70s. Hoquiam and Long Beach had highs in the low 70s.
The cool air will move inland Saturday night bringing an abrupt end to our way-too-hot weather (except for you, Mr. 5th Dentist) as that thermal trough moves into Eastern Washington. (What's a thermal trough? We have the information in our Weather FAQ.) Highs around the Seattle area will be some 15-20 degrees cooler -- into the upper 70s and low 80s. We were that hot before noon Saturday.
A more pleasant and temperate pattern of morning clouds, afternoon sunshine is expected for the balance of the week, with highs in the mid-upper 70s, which should only upset about 11 percent of you, according to our poll.
Stay cool out there!
