SEATTLE - You can find magazine ads touting CNN's convention coverage just about everywhere.
You'd be hard-pressed to find anything like that from ABC, CBS or NBC.
That's because the broadcast networks, in their infinite wisdom, decided to all but ignore the Democratic Convention.
God forbid anyone be forced to give up watching some guy wolf down goat gonads on "Fear Factor", or forgo the side-splitting laughter on "According to Jim."
The networks are in the business of deciding what we viewers want, with little thought given as to what we might need.
That's why ABC, CBS and NBC tossed but one hour's worth of the Democratic convention our way each night.
That's why the Republican Convention will get the same shoddy treatment.
Network brass have decided that democracy is just not riveting enough; that the conventions are mere formalities.
So instead of providing us with background and perspective on party platforms and national issues, we get "The King of Queens."
From the convention, we get instant polls and celebrity sightings, speech highlights and pro-forma interviews; a jam-packed hour of network minutia.
What we don't get is the sense of what it all means and where it may lead us.
I suppose I was just stupid for expecting more from them.
