Another Arson Attempt In Seattle

SEATTLE - It's the last thing Seattle firefighters wanted: another arson.

Firefighters say an arsonist tried to set a porch on fire of a University District house -- all the while two people were sleeping inside.

This means 13 arsons in less than a week, and the fourth arson in the University District.

The fire occurred around 7 o'clock Thursday morning on 20th Avenue Northeast, which is not too far from some of the other arsons in this area.

It appears as though the arsonist set some nearby debris on fire.

Erin Gibbons remembers hearing her dog barking. She ignored it. Then she heard a man yelling, and kept repeating her address. A garbage can full of old mailers and 3 fire logs stored on her porch were burning.

"Not just in our yard, but up on the porch! It is totally violating my space," Gibbons said.

She says she was "buck naked" on her porch fighting the small fire with a fire extinguisher. When it was out, she just collapsed on the stoop.

"Somebody just said, 'You could probably put on your clothes,' but you know being naked was the last thing I was worrying about when I saw this fire," she said.

"I feel like I was targeted, but I escaped, I don't feel so much a victim," she added. "I would recommend that people move their combustibles and get a fire extinguisher."

Meanwhile, five hours later, Seattle firefighters get another suspicious call of a small brush fire nestled between two townhouses near Shoreline.

Jeff Kidrowski was driving by and jumped out of his rig and put a garden hose on it.

It was a little too close for comfort. Right across the street from the fire, was Kidrowski's rental house. Turns out, that house was torched by serial arsonist Paul Keller back in 1993.

Keller is serving a life sentence. Over a two-year period, he admitted setting 80 fires that killed three people. His father turned him in.

Fire investigators haven't pinpointed the cause of the bush fire, but they say it appears it was accidental and not connected to the other arsons.

However, their hunch is that the University District fire Thursday morning was connected. Their investigation continues.

If you have any information that can help investigators catch the arsonist, you're asked to call 1-800-55-ARSON.
