SEATTLE - A local orthodontist faces charges of cyber-sex with some of his young female patients.
Dr. Mark Joondeph denies the charges and pleaded not guilty in court Monday.
He walked out of the courtroom with his attorney, but only after he agreed to post a $50,000 bond for his freedom within in the next 48 hours.
The orthodontist faces charges that range from communicating with minors for immoral purposes, possessing pictures of minors engaged in sexually explicit acts, and distributing those pictures to the public.
Joondeph chose not to speak with us on camera, but his attorney Mark Prothero said: "He's at a very low point, as you can imagine, and he's going to try to dig himself out of this. It's a sickness, and he's going to try to deal with it and get well."
Sandy Estep, who is the mother of one of the teenage victims Joondeph allegedly contacted, says she is not sympathetic.
"If he's depressed, it's his own fault," she said. "He's depressed because he got caught. This is a man who was seriously taking some chances that he couldn't afford to take."
Jim and Sandy Estep's daughter helped pull the plug on the alleged cyber-sex chats, by telling her parents about the messages, and who she believed sent them.
The family worked with investigators to bait Joondeph online; that's why Sandy Estep is disappointed, that he's denying it.
"I'm not surprised, I don't have any good feelings toward this man," she said. "And as far as I feel, I feel that we'll prepare our daughter for any way to help with this investigation. We'll do whatever we can to see this through and we hope that he gets help."
Joondeph has to turn his passport over to the King County Sheriff's Office because prosecutors think he's a flight risk.
He's also been ordered to stay away from minors, and he's not allowed to use the Internet.
As for now, the orthodontist is not practicing in King County. Investigators think there may be other victims.
If convicted, Joondeph faces up to five years in prison.
