Good Tire Pressure Means Savings At The Pump

Good Tire Pressure Means Savings At The Pump
SEATTLE - Gasoline prices got you down? These days it's more important than ever to get the most miles out of every gallon.

A good way to do that is to make sure your tires are properly inflated. It's estimated that at least a third of us drive around with at least one under-inflated tire. That not only reduces fuel economy, it's also a safety hazard.

It's estimated that if you keep your tires properly inflated, you can boost your mileage from 2 to 3%.

That's not a huge savings, but it will certainly add up over time.

Remember, you can't tell if a tire is properly inflated by looking at it. You need to use a good tire gauge.

"One of the things we recommend is that you get a good digital tire gauge," Phil Reed, Consumer Advice Editor for Edmunds.com. "They're much easier to use than the old ones and much more accurate."

In most cases, you'll find the recommended tire pressure on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb or the glove box. It should also be in your owner's manual.

Check the pressure at least once a month, when the tires are cold.
