'I Am Fat, And That's OK'

'I Am Fat, And That's OK'
SEATTLE - A unique club started by three local people will celebrate it's first anniversary this weekend. Members of this group don't fit into the traditional mold and that's perfectly OK.

At Abundance Northwest, members get together every month to dance, talk, and party. They're encouraged to have tons of fun -- literally.

Most of the members of this club describe themselves as "big, beautiful women," and they're not ashamed to be fat. But they do spell it differently.

Phat.

"Regular bars cater to thinner people," says co-founder Suz James. She, along with friends Tina Walker and Luke Henson started Abundance Northwest a year ago. They get together in different establishments every month to have a great time in an atmosphere where it's OK to be fat.

"Once you own the word (fat), other people can't use it against you," Walker says. "I mean, there's no doubt about it that when you look at me, I am fat, and it's OK."

Over the past year, these three have watched members as they get more comfortable with themselves, and their self-esteem blossoms.

"A lot of people maybe change how they dress, or the way they do their hair," James says.

Abundance Northwest's one year anniversary party is December 11 at The Spotlight in Renton. The party begins at 9 p.m.

You're invited, only leave your inhibitions and your political correctness at home. These ladies love songs like "Baby Got Back."

"It's amazing how the dance floor always is packed on that song," recalls Walker.

"There's lots of 'fat chick' songs that we listen to," adds James.

The group is proving that size doesn't matter, and that sometimes, the only thing holding us back is ourselves.

"Accepting yourself as you are is just the very first step," says Walker.
