Normandy Park Considers Tough New Restrictions On RVs and Trailers

NORMANDY PARK - You spend a bundle on a new RV, a boat, or a trailer, and you want to park it at home.

But Normandy Park may soon put the brakes on that, saying if your neighbors can see it, it’s gotta go.

Weslyn Owens likes the view of the Sound out her front window. Or at least, most of it.

"You can't see the kids walking by, you can't see the runners walking by," she said.

That's what happened when her next door neighbor parked his mammoth RV in his driveway.

She complained to the city of Normandy Park.

"This is supposed to be a residence; it's not an RV park," Owens said.

Patrick Tregnan is the neighbor. The RV's in storage now, but his big boat has replaced it.

"For me to have to get rid of the use of my land so this lady on this side, when she looks this way out her window won't have to look at something is ridiculous to me," Tregnan said.

But this neighborly disagreement has prompted city leaders, who are proud of this quiet, picturesque city of 7,600, to rewrite existing code.

The proposal in essence will ban any RV's, boats on trailer, any trailer of any sort on your own property unless its out of view in the backyard.

"There are storage yards for such vehicles and we feel that's where they belong if you can't store them on site," said Normandy Park councilman John Rankin.

That means Krystal Hanson's 28-foot RV will have to go.

"As long as it's not obtrusive out in people's ways, I don't see why it shouldn't be on my property," she said.

The Thomas' fifth-wheel that's been in his driveway for 11 years will have to go too.

"We are in our 17th year of retirement and we just plain can't afford $300 for the storage," Shirley Thomas said.

It comes down to city image and what makes an eyesore. The Tregnan's new big boat would be an eyesore.

"There are dirt driveways and tress and they are not going to be able to make this Beverly Hills," Tregnan said.

"It's not Normandy RV Park, it's Normandy Park," Owens countered.

We looked at other local cities that have restrictions on RVs and trailer parking but couldn't find any with rules as strict as they are proposing here.

The city council will talk about the issue on March 8.
