'Edgar Martinez Drive' Road Sign Goes Up In Seattle
SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels and Edgar Martinez Saturday unveiled the first of the eight signs that will mark Seattle's new Edgar Martinez Drive South.

Nickels says the retired Mariners player has given the city "a great legacy of success in baseball and success in life."

The drive is near Safeco Field, where the Mariners play at the south end of downtown.

"This is an amazing compliment and a great honor that I will treasure forever,” Martinez said.

To ensure a smooth transition, the new signs will be mounted alongside the old ones for -- South Atlantic Street -- for a while.

Signage and other costs associated with the street-name change were paid for by private fundraising, which was coordinated by the Downtown Seattle Association.

An $11,000 check will also be given to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, at Martinez’ request. Parent Project is a not-for-profit organization that supports children with Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy through lobbying and education efforts.

Martinez signed on with the Seattle Mariners in 1987 and spent his entire career with the team. He retired last fall after earning the Silver Slugger Award four times, the American League Designated Hitter of the Year four times, the American League Player of the Month five times, and playing on seven All-Star teams.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig renamed the designated hitter award "Edgar Martinez Designated Hitter Award" during Martinez's retirement ceremonies.
