LAKEWOOD - A father and his young son were left for dead in the middle of the road, and now the search is on for the hit-and-run driver.

The man and his son were on a motorcycle in Lakewood at the intersection of 100th Southwest and Southwest 59th when they were hit.

The family is now pleading for the hit and run driver to come forward, because when you hit someone on a motorcycle, they have no protection.

"I think it's horrible for somebody to leave a child laying on the ground not knowing they are dead or alive," said victim's mother Annika Dean.

Her 8-year-old son Alex was on the back of a motorcycle with his dad driving last Friday evening. Witnesses say a vehicle ran a red light and smashed right into the helpless pair, and didn't stop.

"That's what just blew me out of the water," said witness Katherine Scott. "Especially with seeing a little guy sitting in the middle of the street next to his dad was just mind-boggling to me that someone wouldn't want to come and help the situation to make sure somebody was OK."

By the looks of the motorcycle, it's a wonder anyone survived. Not only did they survive this near-fatal crash, Alex and his father Pat Doyle are up and walking around Monday.

Witnesses tell us that is no less than a miracle.

"And this car ran a red light and he smashed into the front of the motorcycle and then the next thing I knew we were on the ground just laying there," Alex said.

Alex is the one doing the talking about the collision, because his dad has lost all memory of what happened.

"Nothing, I don't remember going to work last week or anything like that," Pat Doyle said. "I just remember waking up in bed."

Pat remembers buying the motorcycle -- it was brand new. But he doesn't remember anything about taking his son for a ride.

And he certainly doesn't remember who hit them and then took off.

"It's crazy," he said. "I don't know who could do that."

"I think it's horrible and I think this person needs to get caught," Annika added.

Both Pat and Alex realize what saved them was they were both wearing helmets.

Lakewood Police say the challenge is that no one has reported a very good description of the car. Some say it may have been a Buick, and the color varies from white to red.

They're hoping this story kicks loose some more leads.
