MARYSVILLE - Three people were killed and four others were injured when a truck pulling a fifth-wheel trailer crossed the center line of I-5 near Marysville and crashed into several cars Monday afternoon.
The State Patrol says the truck, hauling a 30-foot trailer, was going southbound at 2:24 p.m. when it crossed into the northbound lanes near the 116th Street exit.
It first crashed into a silver Toyota Prius, and then into a red Ford Taurus, which ended up rolling.
The truck and trailer then crashed into a Chevy pickup truck and a Mazda truck before the trailer flipped onto its side.
Two people in the Taurus, 41-year-old Darrell Knapp and his wife, 42-year-old Sandra Knapp, died at the scene. Their 6-year-old foster son was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he later died.
Three people in the Prius suffered serious injuries and were taken to Everett
Medical Center's Colby Campus. There were minor injuries to the two people in the truck pulling the fifth wheel trailer, and no injuries to the four people in the other two pickup trucks.
Northbound lanes of I-5 were closed for several hours while state patrol detectives investigated the crash. Traffic was diverted off the freeway and detoured around the crash site via surface streets. Southbound traffic was backed up for several miles as people slowed to look at the crash scene.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the truck to cross into the other lanes.
"We don't know if a vehicle cut the truck off or exactly what happened," said Trooper Lance Ramsay, who added there was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.
