Great Poem, Stupid Title

SEATTLE - The poem itself was very well written.

It dealt with the pressure and emotional turmoil that high school girls face when it comes to being sexually active.

Too bad that most kids - and parents - won't get to read it.

Shoreline's Shorewood High School yanked the poem from its magazine - and for good reason.

It was because of the title.

I can't tell you what the whole title is without bringing the FCC down around my ears.

Let's just say it used a word that rhymes with duck and was called "My First ______"

I'd be going after the faculty adviser who showed amazing stupidity by allowing that title to be used.

Instead, Shorewood's principal is catching flak from students and parents for not allowing the magazine to be distributed.

His critics are crying "censorship."

I call it being responsible.

Look, I'm usually more profane than profound, but no way should something like that make it into a high school magazine.

I don't care if it got kids' attention, or whatever weak excuse is used to try and justify using the word in the title.

The principal deserves a pat on the back, not a kick in the butt, for pulling it.

Too bad though.

It really was a very well written poem.
