KITSAP COUNTY - A grandfather is in a Kitsap County jail, accused of doing something that's almost beyond words.

Donald Griffin tried to hide his face as he walked into court in Kitsap County on Thursday, but the 63-year-old grandfather cannot hide from the accusations he now faces.

Investigators tell KOMO 4 News, Griffin raped his own 3-year-old granddaughter, and left the little girl with herpes.

In official court papers, Griffin tried to claim his granddaughter was the one who barricaded the door at his Kitsap County home with her toy box, and that she locked the door as well.

Then he admitted to detectives that he was "too curious - and that it went too far."

Griffin's daughter, the little girl's mother, fell apart as she left the courtroom.

"It's my Dad," she sobbed, "and I trusted him with my daughter....oh God..."

Investigators say Griffin raped his granddaughter at his home in East Kitsap County near Port Orchard.

KOMO 4 News spoke off-camera with one of the grandfather's neighbors who seemed visibly shaken when he heard about the accusation, telling us, "my granddaughter's been over there to play."

Griffin's attorney wouldn't tell us if his client denied the allegations saying he couldn't talk about that right now, but Tim Kelly did say this: "He loves his family. That might be difficult for some people to believe at this point but he does love his family."

There are also accusations Griffin had child pornography on his computer.

The Judge set his bail at $500,000.
