NEW YORK - New research suggests that breakfast may help with weight control, but
only if you eat cereal.
Over 2,000 girls kept food diaries so researchers could analyze their
diets over a 10 year period.
What they found was surprising -- breakfast
eaters were less likely to be overweight, but only if they ate cereal.
Non-cereal breakfasts did not help with weight control.
And cereal may be good for women of all ages.
A second study looked at
over 4000 adults and found that women who ate cereal for breakfast were 30 percent less likely to be overweight.
Cereal eaters also had more fiber and more calcium in their diets, in part
due to the non-fat or low-fat milk poured on top.
But the biggest benefit to eating cereal
may be in what you are not eating. Cereals contain fewer calories and less
saturated fat than donuts or bacon and eggs.
But experts say not all breakfast cereals are equally beneficial -- you
should look for cereals high in fiber and low in sugar for maximum
breakfast health benefits.
