Some Muslims Upset Over Boeing Ad

SEATTLE - Some local Muslims say an ad by Boeing has gone too far. A new advertisement by Boeing and its business partner Bell Helicopters depicts military movement at a Muslim mosque.

Boeing and Bell Helicopters build the Osprey. It's already been controversial for its safety and cost.

But then came a new advertisement to promote and sell the Osprey.

It reads: 'It descends from the heavens" and goes on to read: "Ironically it unleashes hell."

The soldiers dropping from the aircraft are landing on a mosque.

"At first I was infuriated," said Jeff Siddiqui with the American Muslims of Puget Sound. "Then I thought it's just one of those body-blows that Muslims and Arabs in this country keep receiving."

Siddiqui says the ad is devastating to the Muslims who have seen it.

The ad is not an actual picture but computer images pasted together. The name on the mosque is Mohammed Mosque.

Boeing and Bell published the ad last month in the Armed Forces Journal but pulled it. Then Boeing says it was mistakenly reprinted in the National Journal last week.

Just to put it in perspective, if this had been around Jews instead of Muslims, an apology would not have been enough," Siddiqui said.

But Boeing has apologized to the Muslim community saying:

"We consider the ad offensive, regret its publication and apologize to those who, like us, are dismayed with its contents... We immediately requested that our partner's agency withdraw and destroy all print proofs of the advertisement."

But many in the Muslim community want more. They want all Americans to be offended, and want Bell and Boeing to fire the ad agency.

"That would tell me that there are serious consequences to a very serious offensive ad," Siddiqui said.

Bell Helicopters did not return calls by KOMO 4 News Monday afternoon. The ad was developed by TM Advertising out of Irving, Texas. So far, we understand that Bell has not fired the agency.

Siddiqui says at a time when the military and the U.S. Government are trying to improve their image in the Muslim world, abroad and at home, this ad is a devastating setback.
