SEATTLE - With home heating costs expected to skyrocket this winter, many of us are looking for ways to stay warm without going broke. If you tend to spend a lot of time in one part of the house, consider turning down the thermostat and using a space heater to warm up that area.

Good Housekeeping Magazine (www.goodhousekeeping.com) says the state-of-the-art Vornado EH1-0028-06 ($100) warmed rooms "better and faster" than other models it tested.

The Good Housekeeping Institute's Carolyn Forte says it also has a digital thermostat. "You can set the temperature that you want the room to be," she says, "and the unit will cycle on and off. So it's very easy to use and it's also very precise."

If you're looking or a personal heater, something to heat up a very small space, consider the Honeywell HZ-2800 ($30).

If you want quiet, Good Housekeeping says check out the Bionaire BH-3900 ($70). "It uses a bit of a different technology," Forte says, "so it doesn't have the fan that the other ones have so that does make it quieter." The Bionaire is larger than other units the GH Institute tested, but the magazine says "you can barely hear it."
