WESTERN WASHINGTON - Monday morning turned out to be a tricky one for many drivers in Western Washington. Temperatures overnight dropped to well below freezing in many areas. That meant some icy roadways and a plethora of minor accidents.

Sanding trucks were out in force trying to keep things moving, but it wasn't enough for those who got stuck in the lengthy backups brought on by all the accidents.

Elevated roadways were the worst, prompting traffic reporters such as our own Paul Tosch to issue the annual warnings: go slow if your commute takes you over such routes as the West Seattle Freeway.

We also had a few school schedule changes because of the cold weather. King's West School in Bremerton closed Monday because of no electricity. And a few schools in Pacific County were also disrupted because of the weather.

And don't look now, but the S word is in the latest forecast from the KOMO 4cast Center. Check it out.

Local road crews are taking the threat of snow seriously, getting their gear ready to roll should the need arise. For that part of the story, click the audio link on this page.
