BELLEVUE - It wasn't just champagne and fireworks heralding the start of the New Year early Sunday morning.

Just 12 seconds after midnight, the area's first baby of 2006 was born at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue.

It was just after the "Three, two, one" countdown had finished to welcome 2006 and Tacara Koselke was laying in a hospital bed in the labor and delivery wing at Overlake.

"I was hearing 'push, one, two, three!', that's what I heard," said Tacara.

'Baby New Year', as he's being called until his parents decide on a name, was born a few seconds later. He's a healthy eight pounds, ten ounces.

He was due on January 3rd.

But his parents believe their son came early not just for the bragging rights, but to heal them from a sad memory that comes to mind every New Year's day.

"We had a tragedy in the family," Tacara said. "His cousin died on Ney Years three years ago.

But 'Baby New Year' brought a smile to everyone's face and the hospital staff surprised the new parents with a gift basket.

"It's just great that we get the first," said happy grandpa Clint Bailey. "I was kind of hoping for the last for a tax deduction. But that's okay. He came out healthy and happy."

'Baby New Year' is doing so well he can go home tonight. He's earned the special title -- now all he needs is a name.
