More Weather Records Than You Can Shake A Stick At

SEATTLE - As they say, records are made to be broken. And just because Seattle didn't officially knock off the top spot in the consecutive day of rain record streak (ended Sunday at 27, record was 33) doesn't mean there aren't some other records out there that are in danger of breaking.

Wettest 30 Day Stretch Ever

While Seattle won't make the 33 consecutive days of rain, the streak will go down as one of the wettest periods in Seattle history.

Seattle set its record for amount of rain over any 30 day period Tuesday with 14.06" of rain since Dec. 19.

The old record was 12.95" set from Feb. 12- Mar. 12 in 1972.

Incidentally, we have definitively concluded that the amount of rain that fell in Seattle's 33-day streak in 1953 was 13.92" of rain So even though this streak was shorter, it was wetter.

Olympia, Tacoma Nearing Streak Records

Meanwhile, down in Olympia, where it did rain on both days this past weekend, their streak is nearing the record 33 days, set the same time from Jan 6-Feb.7, 1953 as Seattle's. Through Tuesday, Olympia had an impressive 31-day streak going.

Tacoma (McChord AFB) got a little rain late Tuesday to keep their streak going at 30 days. Their record, according to the Western Regional Climate Center, was also that same 33 days set on the same dates in 1953.

Also, Shelton (31) and Forks (30) have their rain streaks alive through Tuesday as well, but their records are a bit further away.

Shelton's record is 41 days set Nov. 7 - Dec. 17 in 1990. Forks' record is 51 days set Jan. 12- Mar. 5 in 1998.

Proof Law Of Averages Works

It's been kind of hidden in the background with all the rain talk, but Seattle also has some crazy temperature streaks going too.

From Nov. 11-Dec. 16 (that's 36 days) the high temperature was at or below normal. But then once it went above on Dec. 17, every day since has been warmer than normal. As of Tuesday, the number of consecutive days with high temperatures warmer than normal is at 32.

When Will These Streaks End?

Wednesday and Thursday will just see isolated showers, so it'll be hit-and-miss whether the rain streaks continue. More rain expected Friday and Saturday, but then perhaps a dry day Sunday, so it's likely Shelton and Forks' records are safe.

As for the temperature streak -- we need a day under 46 degrees to break that run, and it'll be close, as highs are forecast to stay in the mid 40s through the week.
