'I Just Wish Someone Could Step Forward'
PIERCE COUNTY - A 5-year-old Pierce County boy is in a drug-induced coma, fighting for his life after a crash that took the life of his step-father and injured his mother.

They were in injured in a massive pile up on I-5 in Tacoma Monday night.

It began when a rolled up tarp fell off a truck and onto the freeway. The tarp was about two feet thick and 10 feet long when it fell over the truck.

Drivers swerved, and the result was a collision which forced one of the cars into a Class A tow truck, pulling an out-of -service bus.

23-year-old Sandy Harmon died in a grinding collision with the tow truck.

Harmon's car was destroyed. His fiancee, Christina Wheeler, was in the front passenger seat. She is being treated for possible internal injuries.

Their 3-month-old daughter Violet was in a child seat. She was uninjured.

Five-year-old Austin Hardy was sitting behind his step-father. He is fighting for life with head, spleen and liver injuries along with numerous broken bones.

The family runs Harmony trucking and Sandy's father, Tom, says the driver should secured his tarp: "Straps cost money, tarps cost money. The person was either totally negligent or brain dead."

Sandy's mother Laraine added: "My son is gone. Of course I'm angry. I just wish someone had the .... and could step forward."

Tom Harmon then added: "If he's that much of an airhead, maybe he'll lose his insurance and his license, but perhaps he shouldn't be out there if he's not doing a good job."

The State Patrol's J.J. Gundermann says there are markings on the tarp and they will try to trace it. But: "It is a challenge. We will try but we are not promising anything other than effort."
