SEATTLE - Belltown resident Alex Mayer makes movies here in Washington.

His new movie claims that billionaire Paul Allen has some shady "otherworldly" dealings.

"Not only is trying to buy up all of earth," explains Mayer, "but he's looking beyond to business opportunities in the galaxy."

You've got to be kidding!

"Yes, it is a mockumentary," he said with a slight chuckle. "I lied to you earlier, that was very passive-aggressive. It's not true, I made it all up."

Mayer has spent the last several years becoming the Steven Spielberg of the Northwest.

"I make low-budget digital features. My first one was called 'Doomed Planet,' which was released in 2000."

Ok, we'll bite...what's the plot?

"It's about two rival cults battling it out on the eve of the WTO riots," he explained.

He was so jazzed about the outcome he took the movie on the road.

"I did a West Coast tour with a band called Plesiosaur, which is kind of a punk-rock-Karaoke- band."

The 40-year-old filmmaker originally wanted to turn his lens on Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

"That really led us to Paul Allen, who, if it's possible, is even more fascinating. (He) has so much going on in his life with his projects that it's hard to keep track of."

Mayer found the main actor for his low-budget epic where you would find most high caliber thespians -- on Public Access TV.

Mayer recalled "I saw this guy that I thought looked a little but like Paul Allen. So, I called him and said 'do you want to play Paul Allen in a mockmentary?' And we just kind of ran with it and it turned out the guy was perfect!"

Mayer is a big proponent of shooting movies on digital video, but he believes there are limitations.

"Production values are paid for. So, if you want a movie that looks like a fancy, high-budget, Hollywood movie, you need a budget and you shouldn't be working this way."

He spent about $3,000 on "Paul Alien."

"The entire budget went to buying the cast and crew some food and beer!"

Mayer says he's living the dream of being a filmmaker...on his terms.

"All my films are available on Amazon. So, you can go buy them right now."

"Paul Alien" makes its world premiere, at least in this one, on March 19 in California.
