VANCOUVER, WASH. - A teenager was stabbed to death at a Vancouver McDonald's outlet Thursday and a man was arrested after being pursued on foot, police said.

28-year-old David Barton Sullivan made his first appearance in Clark County Superior Court Friday. He was ordered held without bail for investigation of murder. He'll be arraigned next Friday. Police say Sullivan is a sex offender with a history of mental illness.

17-year-old Anna Svidersky, a Fort Vancouver High School student who worked at the fast-food outlet, was stabbed in the chest shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday and was pronounced dead at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore., Cpl. Kathleen A. McNicholas said.

Shortly after the first report of the stabbing, emergency dispatchers received a report that a man was being pursued on foot and police dogs were dispatched. Officers said a man was soon arrested and a knife was found nearby.

Police did not immediately say what led to the stabbing in an area about halfway between downtown and Orchards. McNicholas said there was no indication that the man in custody and the girl who was killed knew each other.

A defense lawyer appointed to represent Sullivan says he had pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment with sexual motivation in 2003 for trying to kidnap a 14-year-old girl in Vancouver. He was sent to Western State Hospital, treated for paranoid schizophrenia and found competent to stand trial. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail.
