They Took A Wrong And Made It Right
SEATTLE - They saw and wrong and made it right.

Federal Way school officials deserve a lot of credit for that.

It started with a 16-year-old student who was all set to sing in a high school musical last month.

But just before the curtain went up, the ax dropped on her.

The student was barred from singing.

Seems a lone parent had complained to the Decatur High School choir director about the song that ended up not being sung.

"Take Me or Leave Me" is from the hit Broadway musical "Rent."

The lyrics deal with a contentious relationship that happens to be lesbian.

There was no sexual content in the song, but that didn't stop the choir director from dumping the number after decreeing it to be "inappropriate."

The girl who was barred from singing decided to press the issue.

Fast forward to a school board meeting this week.

Instead of burrowing deeper into the hole of ignorance that had already been dug by the choir director, the Federal Way school board unanimously voted to add sexual orientation to the district's policy on discrimination.

The young singer had hit a high note.

She was pleased.

The people who supported here were pleased.

The school board was pleased.

I don't know how the choir director or the complaining parent feel, but then, who the hell cares?
