Snow? On April 29th?

SEATTLE - Next thing you'll know, we'll be asked to trade in our mountains and start planting corn.

A day after temperatures were solidly in the 70s around the Puget Sound region -- Seattle hit 73, Tacoma hit 75 and Olympia hit 79 -- it actually snowed in some spots around here.

A fairly strong front aided by a Puget Sound Convergence Zone combined to make for a much wetter and cooler day Saturday. How cool? We got several reports of snow along the upper Eastside, such as the hills of Redmond and Snoqualmie Ridge.

Many there reported afternoon temperatures in the mid 30s -- so some 40 degrees cooler than it was there 24 hours earlier. Temperature drops of that magnitude aren't too out of the ordinary in the Midwest, but are practically unheard of here in western Washington.

In this case, the heavy showers around our area pulled the snow levels down to about 500 feet. (Read more on the physics behind it in our Weather FAQ.)

The snow didn't appear to stick much beyond a light dusting, and it didn't cause any problems, but was sure a surprise for being two days away from May.

Long range forecasts have us quickly getting back to the sunshine for Sunday, and temperatures will return to the 70s again by the middle of the week. But this time, and cooling trend at the end of the warm spell would just be a more Northwest-like few degrees. Which is good that we keep our identity, because, I happen to like our mountains :)
