SEATTLE - An elderly man is dead after a fire broke out in a two-story home in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood early Monday morning.

The fire started just before 6 a.m. in the 6200 block of Carlton Avenue South. Flames were coming out of the first floor of the five-unit home when firefighters arrived.

People standing outside told firefighters one person was trapped. Investigators found a man inside the front door on the first floor. He had burns and smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

No one else was hurt and firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly.

Investigators say the cause was a discarded smoking material near a recliner. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $80,000.

Fire officials say residents of other units in the house were able to return to their homes.
