SEATTLE - The Seattle City Council decided Monday that a
park adjacent to the Northwest African American Museum, which is
scheduled to open next year, should be renamed in memory of rock 'n
roll legend Jimi Hendrix.
Council member Jean Godden said the tribute to one of Seattle
most famous native sons is long overdue.
The final decision on the name of the park, which called the
Colman School Lot, is in the hands of parks superintendent Ken
Bounds, but the resolution encourages him to name the park in
Hendrix's honor.
The resolution also called for city assistant to relocate a
bronze statue of Hendrix now on Broadway in Seattle's Capitol Hill
neighborhood to the Central Area park. The statue is owned by
Hendrix fan and founder of AEI Music Network, Michael Malone.
Malone has offered the statue to the city.
Hendrix grew up in Seattle's Central District, where he taught
himself to play the guitar. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame in 1992.
