SEATTLE -
There's the church that wants to discriminate against homosexuals.
And then there's the school district that wants to toss freedom of religion out the window.
Antioch Bible Church holds its Sunday services in a high school gym it rents from the Lake Washington School District.
Last Sunday, Antioch asked its congregation to sign a referendum that would take civil liberties away from gays and lesbians.
Well, the Lake Washington School District took a legal peek at the goings on and decided, hey, that's against a state law that says facilities of a public agency (like schools) can't be used in electing people or assisting campaigns.
The district sent Antioch a letter detailing that, along with a thinly veiled threat about doing it again.
I guess district officials conveniently forgot all about those "vote yes" levy signs I've repeatedly seen on school reader boards.
I guess the district also had a brief memory lapse about how classrooms have been used for political caucus meetings.
Look, as much as I hate what Referendum 65 is trying to do, I deplore the Lake Washington School District's attempt to restrict the people who attend Antioch Church from practicing their religion in a legally protected manner.
Just because Antioch Bible Church is preaching and promoting intolerance doesn't leave the Lake Washington School District free to toss out the 1st Amendment.
