HOQUIAM - A man is dead and his wife is in critical condition in a Seattle hospital after what police are investigating as a home invasion robbery that turned into murder.
Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers said they received a 911 call just after 11 a.m. Saturday from a house in the 2300 block of Aberdeen Avenue in Hoquiam. A son had just gone there to his parents' house for a visit and found his 75-year-old father beaten to death and his 80-year-old mother also badly beaten but still alive.
Police say the home was ransacked, and that they believe the murder likely stemmed from a home invasion robbery that went bad. Police also believe the murder had actually occurred several days ago -- perhaps as early as last Monday.
Investigators say both victims were badly beaten, and that it appears the man died from those injuries, and the woman was so badly injured, she was unable to move and had been lying there helpless on the ground for several days until her son found them Saturday.
Informants led Hoquiam police to a 33-year-old man who lived in the general area of Aberdeen. Several local police agencies canvassed the area, until one found the suspect and pursued him on foot.
The suspect was eventually arrested in a yard near AJ West Elementary School in Aberdeen around 5:30 p.m.
The suspect's 35-year-old girlfriend was also taken into custody.
The suspect has several felony probation violations and has a criminal drug history.
The female victim was taken to a community hospital and was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she is currently in critical condition.
Police believe the victim's home was targeted by the suspect.
The victims' names have not been released.
