Timely Drill For Rogers High Students

PUYALLUP - A drill at Rogers High School in Puyallup Wednesday had the school in lockdown as police searched for "gunmen." And while it may have only been a drill, it comes right on the heels of a real threat at the school.

The scenario is stolen right from the headlines: several armed students have taken over the school. They've already killed and wounded several of their classmates and still others have been taken hostage.

At any other school, the drill be fun and games, but at Rogers they're taking it serious. It was just over a month ago that a Rogers H.S. student was arrested for making a threat against his own school, threatening to shoot up the place. Students were shaken by the whole incident.

Because this comes so close on the heels of that threat, this emergency drill could have been called off. The students and the school had that option, but they say it's because of that threat that they wanted to go through it.

Rogers High students think the drill is such a good idea that they're capturing it on video.

"It should actually calm people's nerves I think knowing that they can get here quick and deal with the situation," said student Brad Wood.

The exercise is designed to give emergency crews practice at responding to just such an incident. It also gives students and staff members a chance to experience what it's like to be in a real emergency.

"I think some of the people are kind of nervous," said student Jordan Ryder. "But really I think it's helping everyone to go through a simulated scenario to know what would happen if something did actually go on."

The drill wasn't brought on by last month's threat. It has been in the planning for a year.

"The incident that happened a month or so ago was coincidental but we thought it was very important to continue on especially in light of what had happened," said Baron Banks, battalion chief for Central Pierce Fire and Rescue.

A day of unsettling developments all designed to settle the nerves of students and staff.
