SEATTLE - A man was arrested by police late Sunday night after police say he tried to burn down his own house.

It was just after 11 p.m. when police were called to South Brandon Street near the Rainier Valley.

A woman said a man who lived nearby threw something at her home and she was afraid for her safety.

Police say they found the man at his house and tried to talk to him, but he told them to stay away or else he would blow up his house if officers came closer.

Officers said they didn't know if the man had a weapon, so they made an attempt to get inside. But before they entered, they smelled a strong odor of natural gas. Turns out, the man had ignited the natural gas, police say, which ignited a fire inside the home.

Officers ran around the house to try and get the man out, but the flames were too intense.

At some point, an officer saw the man try to get air from a window, so the officer broke that window and grabbed the man, and pulled him to safety.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, then arrested on investigation of assault and arson.
