SEATTLE - Burger King calls them BK Stacker sandwiches; layers of meat, cheese, and bacon that are topped off with stacker sauce. Right now there are three options:

  • Double Stacker - 2 beef patties, 2 slices of cheese, and 2 pieces of bacon for about $2.49.

  • Triple Stacker - 3 patties, 3 pieces of cheese, and 4 pieces of bacon for $3.29

  • Quad Stacker - 4 meat patties, 4 slices of cheese, and 8 slices of bacon for $3.99.

As you'll notice, there's not a shred of produce on any of these sandwiches. In its news release about the Stackers, Burger King says it hopes to satisfy "the serious meat lovers by leaving off the produce and letting them decide exactly how much meat and cheese they can handle."

The BK Stacker is "really easy to eat on the go, because the cheese and sauce hold it all together," says spokeswoman Adrienne Hayes. "It's not slipping and sliding around with tomatoes and lettuce."

You have to know you're eating a ton of calories and fat when you order a sandwich like this. But let me run down the numbers for the Quad Stacker, which has a half a pound of meat in between all that cheese and bacon.

It has 1,000 calories, 68 grams of fat and 30 grams of saturated fat. That is more fat than most adults should have in an entire day.

An average adult should have 65 grams of fat or less per day, and 20 grams of saturated fat or less.

Here's another way to look at this cow on a bun: It has as many calories as 3 cheeseburgers or 4 scoops of Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream. It has as much fat as 2 Big Macs or 3 servings of Haagen-Dazs vanilla. And it has a much saturated fat as 3 Big Macs or 5 large fries.

Why did Burger King decide to launch the Stacker line? Spokeswoman Hayes tells me it all comes down to choice.

"We're just offering people an alternative," she says. "So when you feel like indulging there's something for you." And she adds, with a straight face, "of course everything in moderation."

Burger King does off more healthful choices, such as salads, broiled chicken sandwiches, even veggie burgers. But Hayes says, "we definitely don't sell as many veggie burgers as we sell whoppers and BK Stackers."
