SEATTLE - So much for climate averages...
Seattle averages a 95-degree day about once every other year. But not so this time around.
Seattle hit 95 degrees Sunday -- that's on the heels of their record-breaking 97 on Friday, and record-breaking 96 on Saturday. Thankfully, Seattle did not hit their record high for July 23, which was 99 degrees.
But we did tie a more obscure record -- it's just the second time since records have been kept at Sea-Tac Airport that Seattle has had three days in a row of 95 degrees or hotter temperatures.
The first time was in August of 1977, when we had a stretch of 95, 95, and 96 degree days amidst a brutally-long heat wave that lasted 17 days where 16 of the days were over 80 (the 17th day was 79), 15 of the days were at least 85, 6 of the days were over 90, and 4 days were 95 or hotter.
The hottest consecutive three days ever was in August of 1981, when the mercury hit 99, 98, and then 94. (The day before the 99? It was 93. So this current heat wave could have been worse.)
Here's the official stats of the three day heat wave extravaganza:

We should add in here that Eastern Washington hit some crazy high temperatures Sunday as well. Pasco hit 112 degrees! Yakima hit 109, 107 in Walla Walla and Wenatchee, 106 in Ellensburg and Moses Lake, and even 102 in Spokane and 101 in Pullman.
It's Almost Over!
But, if you're aching to get temperatures at least back under 90, we have some good news. Sunday was the last of the 90+ days for a while.
This strong ridge of high pressure is finally starting to break down Monday, allowing the air mass to cool a little bit. Still pretty toasty Monday though, with highs in the upper 80s expected.
We'll see even further cooling for Tuesday as the marine flow almost gets back to normal. We might even see -- gasp! -- some morning clouds! They won't last long though and another sunny day on tap, but temperatures should top out around 80.
80 degrees should be about the norm through the middle of the week, before cooling back into the 70s just in time for the weekend.
Maybe then we'll truly remember what a "climate average" is :)
