SEATTLE - Planning to travel with your digital camera? Then you'll need to do a few things before you hit the road.
Think storage.
Download anything you want to save from the camera's memory card and then clear it. If you plan to take video clips - which really eat up memory - you'd be smart to get an extra memory card.
The price for digital storage continues to drop. You can get a 1 GB memory card, which is really all that most people need, for as little as $35 to $55.
You can also take a laptop, and then you can download your shots to that. If not, and you have access to computers along the way, you can upload them to a digital storage site. Just make sure you know the rules.
"With some sites you can upload shots then freely download them again," says Paul Reynolds with Consumer Reports Magazine. "With other sites you can't download, but you can at least order photos from the site," he says.
There's one more option, a portable storage drive that lets you download your shots and clear your memory stick. I used one of these little gadgets when I was on a photo safari in Africa last year, and it worked great.
Think power.
If your digital camera uses a special rechargeable battery, you might want to buy a second one to keep in your camera bag.
"It may set you back $20 to $50," Reynolds says, "but it's money well spent if lets you capture something you'd otherwise miss."
