Got a Lock on Home Security? Beware You Might Get Bumped

SEATTLE - If you secure your home with a lock and key, you could be at risk from a lock picking technique that is making waves online and in the security world.

Its called 'Bumping,' and Ann McCrady with Medeco Locks says anyone can learn how to do it in 5 to 10 minutes.

"All that's needed is a key blank, and something, a piece of wood or a screwdriver to bump the key with," McCrady said.

The traditional lock picking method, like that seen in movies and on TV, involves manipulating the pins inside of a lock with small tools, and usually requires a skilled practitioner to open a lock quickly.

But with just a bit of practice, "bumping" can open almost any lock in seconds. Many locks that were designed to be less-susceptible to traditional lock picking methods were no match for bumping.

'Bumping' is not a new technique, but it is gaining popularity. "Previously only experts or security people like locksmiths knew how to do it, but because of the internet its now being publicized much more," said McCrady.

A quick search online yields dozens of how-to-guides, including diagrams and videos.

Hackers and lock pickers are actually bragging about their technique online, and that's what has security experts so worried.

Only classic 'pin-tumbler' locks can be 'bumped,' but that style makes up a majority of the locks now on the market.

Medeco is one of a handful of companies that manufacture 'bump-proof' locks. But the National Crime Prevention Council's Michelle Boykins says Medeco isn't publicizing the technique to make a profit.

"They have been one of our trusted corporate partners for years, they are looking out for consumers," he said.

Still, if you cannot afford to buy new locks, experts recommend using a deadbolt and chain in addition to your classic lock.
