SEATTLE - It started as a senior class project. But now it's turned into something much more.
Alex Mercier, a music major at the University of Washington, has teamed up with his football buddies to produce a CD called "Husky Nation." The senior wide receiver says the inspiration for the CD wasn't all football. It's also babies fighting for their lives.
"This is a great opportunity to generate a great deal of money for a worthwhile cause," Mercier says.
The cause is Lynette Johnson's non-profit foundation called Soulumination, which "celebrates the lives of children facing life-threatening illnesses by providing professional photographs -- free of charge -- of these children and their families."
"No parent should outlive his child," says Johnson, a Seattle photographer, whose work has received national attention.
The CD goes on sale at the first Husky home football game Sept. 2. You can also purchase copies of the 11-song CD online at www.soulumination.org
Christine Garrigan, from Soulumination says, "The music is entirely produced, recorded and performed by Husky athletes. In addition to Mercier, they are free safety Chris Hemphill; wide receiver and track athlete J.R. Wolfork; and, wide receivers Quintin Daniels, Marlon Wood, and Charles Smith. The six are assisted by student and professional rapper Anthony Shears."
