Herb Weisbaum: Are Those Cereal Bars Any Good?
SEATTLE - How do you eat your cereal, in a bowl or in a bar?

Sales of cereal bars are way up. Maybe it's because they're so convenient. But what about the taste?

For its September issue, Consumer Reports tested a half dozen cereal bars and concluded that in many cases the taste and texture were just "so-so."

The Healthy Classics Raisin Bran Cinnamon bar from Post was judged "sticky, tough, and very heavy on the cinnamon."

Quaker's Chewy Low Fat Granola Oatmeal Raisin bar was described as "slightly chalky and quite sweet."

Consumer Reports calls Kraft's South Beach Diet High Protein Cinnamon Raisin bar "very sweet; like a cheap coffee cake."

And Kellogg's All-Bran Honey Oat bar has lots of artificial flavors.

Both the Kashi Honey Almond Flax Chewy Granola bar and the Nature Valley Chewy Granola Oatmeal Raisin bar were rated "very good."

One thing to keep in mind: some of these cereal bars are mighty small, which could tempt you to eat two. Consumer Reports say a better choice would be to have one bar and a some fruit or low-fat yogurt.
