ANA says Boeing's 787 to arrive August 2009

TOKYO (AP) - Japan's All Nippon Airways Co. said Thursday that it will receive the first Boeing 787 jetliner next August, more than a year behind schedule.

ANA has grumbled about the delays in the 787 program, which has been postponed three times and is nearly two years behind its original schedule.

To make up for the delay, ANA said it will introduce nine Boeing 767-300ERs, a midsize aircraft it already uses, during fiscal years 2010 and 2011 that end in March 2012. ANA did not give terms of the deal but said it had negotiated a good price with Boeing on the 767s.

Tokyo-based ANA, the first customer for the 787, had initially expected the first delivery for May this year. But the jet has been hampered by supply chain glitches.

A strike at Boeing involving electricians, mechanics, painters and other hourly workers, which began Sept. 6, has shut down production of Boeing jetliners, including the new 787.

ANA's order for 50 787s is unchanged, but six jets will be delivered a year until 2017, not the initial seven a year until 2015, the carrier said.

The 787 is touted as being more fuel efficient because it is made mostly of light but durable carbon-fiber composites.
