SEATTLE (AP) - Boeing has a bigger problem than first thought with defective connectors called nutplates.
The problem confirmed Nov. 13 on as many as 400 Boeing 737 jets also affects more than 100 widebodies - the 747, 767 and 777 models. A nutplates is a fastener used to attach wires and other items. The problem parts lack an anticorrosion coating. Boeing spokeswoman Bev Holland told The Everett Herald Tuesday the problem is not a flight safety issue. Nutplates can be replaced in factories and during maintenance. Boeing also says it is offering triple pay for workers who volunteer to work on holidays, as the company makes up production from an eight-week Machinists union strike. The engineers' union contract vote will be announced Monday. |
